Here you can see not only the artist but also the Jew Struck; it is no coincidence that the master shows exactly these three in his work. The young Jew from Lublin tells us with his great, bright, and at the same time deeply melancholic eyes about the grief of a people; the prayer leader Isaak Chtoran [sic] tells us how much he yearns for his prayer desk in his faraway synagogue, and the temple official from Warsaw shows us that even in captivity he doesn’t leave his Talmud.44

In summary, it can be stated that Struck’s lithographs are not the product of an intentional cultural exclusion process, but they show to a greater degree the Janus-faced conditions of war. Struck reveals that World War I for Jewry can only be understood as an exclusion, as a fragmentation process, in which the “I” transforms as well as the Other. By using lithographs and by adopting the means of scientific anthropology, Kriegsgefangene manifests objectively the changing relationship between “East” and “West” and culminates in a hybrid exclusion process, one that establishes the borders between the Self and the Other and simultaneously queries these borders and attributions.
